Artist Statement: The idea that the world around us is made up of four different elements – earth, fire, air and water – can be found in many cultures. Ancient Greeks believed that the elements were the building blocks of the universe, and by understanding the elements they could understand not just their surrounds but people themselves. At a time when science was entwined with philosophy, mythology and religion, symbols were constructed to represent these elements. Alchemists used these symbols to help notate their scientific experiments. The four elements also came to be individually associated with many other things including the various phases of the moon, the different seasons, cardinal directions, astrological signs and colours.
